Iceland residency ART / EARTH — JÖKLAMINNI

Belgian artists Mattias De Craene, Stijn Demeulenaere and Kevin Trappeniers arrived in Iceland January 25th to start their one-month residency at SÍM Residency, marking the first chapter of ART / EARTH — JÖKLAMINNI. The project takes glaciers as its point of departure: not as abstract data, but as landscapes that visibly change and disappear, with local movements of ice and water connecting to shifts elsewhere — in sea levels, river systems and low-lying regions such as Belgium.

Coming from distinct artistic practices, each artist develops an individual body of work shaped by field research and dialogue with climate scientists. During their first days at SÍM, Mattias, Stijn and Kevin already met with glaciologist Guðfinna Aðalgeirsdóttir, setting the tone for an exchange between arts and science.

In March, the project continues in Belgium, with Icelandic artists Julie Sjöfn Gasiglia, Vala Sigþrúðar Jónsdóttir and Sigrún Gyða Sveinsdóttir coming to Belgium for a residency at C-TAKT. Public work-in-progress showings will conclude each residency. Curated by Nicolas Baeyens (BE) and Thoranna Bjornsdottir (IS).
